ImageFall beauty trends pay homage to looks from the past.

Much like the fall 2006 fashion shows, this year’s trends in beauty take a page from the past, calling up images of the ’40s, ’60s and ’80s. But what comes around doesn’t necessarily go around—this new take on the retro look is distinctly upgraded to fi t in 2006. Here’s are some of our favorite trends that showed up on the runways.

Smoky Blue
Smudgy eyeliner tends to stick to brown or black or gray. But this fall, the smudgy look brings out a color reminiscent of the ’80s—blue. Diner waitresses and new wave afi cionados alike will love this look that smudges dark navy blues or shimmery sapphires and lighter sky blues to open up eyes. Try L’Oréal Paris HIP High Intensity Pigments Bright Shadow Duo in Showy to offset peacock blue with turquoise. One tip: skip the blush and go for a more natural look with this new incarnation of a hit from the past.

Barrel Fever
Have barrels of fun this fall with giant curls that will have you thinking of Rita Hayworth in Gilda. This look needs lots of volume, so use a product like Bumble & bumble Hair Powder, which adds va-va-volume while extending the time between washings and temporarily adding color to your roots. Start by creating a deep part so one side of your head has more ringlets. Use a medium-sized curling iron barrel like the T3 Tourmaline Twirl so curls retain their rolls. Up the volume by adding Veronica Lake red lips with Shiseido The Makeup Shimmering Lipstick in Sparkling Red so you’ll be the center of attention.

Chimney Sweep Black

Sooty, sooty, sooty. New York fall fashion shows played with blacker than black eyeliner smeared on in sooty smudges for a rock and roll look. Coat eyelashes with black, black, black mascara coupled with black cream eyeliner (try Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in black ink) topped with black powder liner (Laura Mercier Caviar Eye Liner) to set the look. Just remember, a little goes a long ways so skip lipstick in favor of a nude lipgloss so eyes really pop. We like Smashbox Spectrum Lip Gloss in Luminous.

Purple Pop
Oh, how violet has spent such little time on the lips. A grape Popsicle in the summer might leave a stain but rarely does this color fi nd its way into steady rotation. This fall, purple reigned on the catwalks in all its neon incarnations. Whether you chose a grape like Dior Addict Ultra- Gloss in A Bunch of Grapes or M.A.C. Cream Colour Base in Madly magenta, be sure to add a touch of clear gloss. Matte color is not the look you want to achieve.

Messy Updo
What a dream it would be to take your bed head locks, throw them back into a messy bun and still look glamorous. You can. If you have fi ne or super straight hair, start with a volumizer like Frederic Fekkai Instant Volume Root Lifting Spray and then wind hair around a wide-barrel curling iron for loose curls. Then start pinning hair back and don’t forget to pin down loose curls to create ringlets. Think deconstructed, not the more familiar round bun, when putting together this look.
