Transform your look with these simple, and safe, beauty treatments.
Remember that New Year’s resolution you made to feel better about
yourself? Start acting. Freshen up with a treatment that will transform
your look without pain or steep price.
Wink, WinkEvery woman knows that great communication is all
about eye contact. Why not give them something fabulous to gaze at?
Create pronounced peepers with eyelash extensions.
With a little glue and a bit of patience, local make-up artist Janet
Bowser can transform short, stubby lashes into those worthy of a
mascara advertisement.
“Each eyelash extension is bonded to you own,” says Bowser, owner of
Allusions Cosmetics in New Hope. “If you have an eyelash that’s an
inch, we can make it 1.5.”
Prosthetics are attached individually with tinted surgical bonding
adhesive—a process that typically takes two hours. The lashes last
about eight weeks.
“You don’t even need mascara because the bonding is black, so you are actually doubling the thickness of your lashes,” she says.
In addition to creating some drama, the extensions also help the area around the eyes look younger.“
A lot of the time you get a lid that droops down,” says Bowser. “When
you bring the eyelash up and longer like that, it opens up your eye. It
creates an illusion.”
These multi-tasking beauty aids are also resilient—staying on through
showers, workouts, even dips in the swimming pool. They come at a cost
though, about $250 to $400.
If that price has you blinking in dismay, keep in mind there are other
options available, such as eyelash perming. This is a less costly
procedure that still delivers eyes with oomph.
“You wrap a little rod around your eyelash and put on a perm solution.
When you perm them—especially someone who has blond or red hair
—and tint it them, it looks fabulous,” Bowser said.
And, you’ll enjoy lavish lashes for even longer than extensions. This $75 option lasts up to three months.
Bounce BackTesting a variety of styles and trends, you may
have tried every box of dye in the rainbow and set off the smoke alarms
with you arsenal of styling tools. But can you add five inches of
length to your hair without downing a bottle of folic acid?
The answer is yes—thanks to new lines of hair extensions which deliver
lifelike faux locks that blend seamlessly into your natural hair. One
of our favorites: the HairDo line from Jessica Simpson’s famed hair
stylist, Ken Paves. According to Matt Ochs, manager of Giovanni &
Pileggi
in Philadelphia, where the HairDo line is available, different lengths
of synthetic or human hair are available in a number of hues to match
any hair color.
With some strategic placement, a basic bob can be transformed into a
long flowing mane, or a straight style can be automatically transformed
with increased volume and bounce. It’s everything your shampoo
promised, but didn’t deliver.
“It’s really popular,” says Ochs, who has been offering the extensions
for more than six months. “It’s a really simple way to change your
look. It’s fun and easy and reusable.”
One of Ochs’ trained stylists can place the extensions for you. You can
also purchase pieces at the store and style on your own. Synthetic
models run $85 to $95. Human hair extensions start at $500.
